Well, since I need to get my thoughts to something other than yesterday’s game, my take on recruiting needs

losing a lot of LBs to graduation, including all three starters and rover, biggest need for numbers and maybe quality since this years back ups played sparingly

Casey and Pelletier both SRs next year so time to start looking for the next stud WRs, maybe Kelsey gets a 5th year

always a need for a quality DL

who backs up Mayes next two years? Monaco the only underclassman right now, need some depth here

any good coaching staff would have every position open every year. problem with these coaches is that they are narrow minded. they do not place pressure from week to week on the starters. once you are deemed a starter you stay a starter. kids get complacent and we get the result of yesterday. as far as im concerned our wide receivers are the only kids who should be safe going into next year and our kicker. we need to play second stringers more often so we build depth. if you are afraid to play a second stringer then you have either coached them terribly or recruited poorly.

LBs will need serious focus as Van points out. Colt, Rip, and Harvey all moving on with Bott not grooming anyone to step in for next year. Kaufman played in game 1 backing up Colt due to injury and never played again after press and team recognized great play. Pushed to the side behind Rip for rest of season. He has one more year of eligibility, but why come play for Bott again after this treatment? Now the juniors, Hobie has not progressed and has not travelled. Appears Coffman quit mid season based on not on roster even though played special teams since freshman. Would love to know why? Sophomores, Buzz much “buzz” early as a 2nd but Bott barely playing him and has shuffled him around all year with no playing time. Started once for Colt last year and yanked after 2 plays for Cody. Walker plays yesterday at middle for the first time giving up speed and size with much lineman trouble all day. Where do you go from here? Hope a Freshman steps up? Sophomores grow tremendously during spring? This is just one area of mismanagement of the team. D-line has depth and appears gets much better rotation. Just see lack of leadership and Coen’s comment about Colt playing late with game in hand was all year occurrence and BS. Coaches could have avoided situation and injury. Why not have Kaufman, Buzz, or Walker playing??? All of them there and capable. So was it Bott’s decision or head coach?

    1. A QB. Monaco has tools may be OK but Brad a JR .
DL A NG. Otherwise we have depth.
LB Lots of bodies very little PT. Buskirk Weir and Seighman lookbto be best coming up. Walker very arhletic but didnr show much this yr.
WR Sasha back. Fastesr WR but injury prone.
Biabchini and Christiano will be fine. Bibbens and Gamble also. Like to get a few tall recruits.
OL a lot of depth but need 3 or 4 every year.
RB Not really a need unless we fall into a speed burner.
    FB Frankel only returner.
TE Paulson. And Puhl. We are good.
Recruiting will heat up this month.

In my conversations with coaches and players in many sports, I soon learn that there are so many background stories we are not privy to (nor should we be). Often times, I have wondered why an athlete was not getting playing time until I read their bio the next year and it says “missed the year due to injury”. I reflect on diminished PT or poor performance and find they were dealing with nagging injuries all season. Athletes (and at Lehigh, their coaches) often have to deal with academic issues, family issues, emotional issues that we don’t know nor understand here. At bigger schools they simply cut these kids and bring in new ones (scholarships are year to year). The bond that has been developed by the coaches and seniors is incredible. The future is bright.

Rich, Recruiting seems to go in waves. Andy will look to fill most position but there seems to be an increased focus on one each year. The 2015 class had 4 quality LBs ( who will be thrown in the fire next year) :-). Last year’s class loaded up on OL, 5 of them I believe. The emphasis so far this year has been on DBs. I’m sure that QB is high on the list and he should have a pretty good sales pitch with this offense.

True. We know only bits and pieces each year. Gee why didn’t our 3* DL Prendergast see the field. Unless you saw a post game facebook photo of him in street clothes we wouldnt know why.
The bond between thes players and staff is incredible. The respect and fondness fliws both ways. I dont recall ever seeing this deep a connection.

Andy has modified his recruiting over the last 3 classes. Still looking for breadthbof position coverage but more positional emphasis. Like it and it serms to work well.

Van- plenty of LBs that were never given play or practice time or made to play different positions because 1) we were stacked with senior LBs and 2) no one ever thought any of them would get hurt.. thus why no replacement for Caslow when he got hurt.

Caslow was out for several weeks (mostly practice) to start the season and missed the first game plus played with a padded hand. So no one thought LBs would get hurt?? What LBs don’t get banged up in a season.

Regarding team bond, the seniors do appear to have this as the first scholarship class that got much playing time early and continued to mature. The next class has this on offense and nice rotation with a few sophomores too. Again my worry is at LB due to mismanagement of talent and grooming. Last year only Cody in rotation with our 3 graduating seniors. We are two years behind on having the next group ready and no seniors will play next year. If we could not stop the run with 3 seniors, I can only imagine 300yds given up on the ground each week assuming a decent RB.

hope you are right but I can’t name more than 2 that are ready to step in for LB/Rover. and not sure how ready the 2 really are

Just wondering….how many plays do the star linebackers of other teams come out? Historically, our depth always came from either injuries or blowouts.
At the beginning of the season, there were a lot of complaints about our defense. They really began to gel when Lambert returned and Harvey was moved to OL. Are you saying we should have elected to take them out for long stretches to promote better depth in the future? Caslow and Ripanti came in and started as freshmen (I think). Harvey saw relatively little PT until this season. As the players say continuously…trust the process. BTW, Kauffman missed all of last year with injury and truthfully, I don’t know how healthy he as this year. Any chance for a RS…and a shot at going out strong like Lambert and Knott?

Who can step up from the upperclass group? Not sure except for Buskirk. PT for bavkups historically has been scarce. I would not conclude that none are capablr of stepping up simply from lavk of PT.Other than CC few of the seniors got much PT.
Butler may be favorite at Rov. McCain may get first shot inside. Very athletic. From a small school in Ga. Think he may be up to transition finally. Olshanski an A-S LB from NJ. Coffman was 2nd string last yr. What happened this yr ? Dont know.

Add: Walker, Defensive POY, in his area, Scott with 100+ tackles in his senior yr and Weir who has shown some things this year.
It may also be interesting to see what strides Woetzel and Steighman have made. They are both tremendous athletes and have good size and speed for rover.
