Well the questions is will we put a competent D unit on the field. We do have Gate and Rams at home. CSJ basically same forecast as all others. Based on last year’s D, they are all correct.

A 4th place finish would be a major disappointment imo because that likely means struggles in OOC too. I see that as a likely sub .500 season which would obviously be a regression from last year. If the season fails because of the defense then I’d seriously question Coen’s ability to get this team/program back to a playoff level. If this season tanks I’d support a move in another direction….

T want to believe D will be better.i think they will be. Absolutely must get competent D performance early in the season to build confidence. If not D will be as indecisive as last couple of years and continuing as a work in progress.

It has to be better. If not the staff has failed imo. There is zero reason/excuses for the defense to be subpar again this year.

This is imo Coen’s biggest year as head coach since 2010. Prior to that year he (with A LOT of help/encouragement from Sterrett) brought in Cechinni to help with a bumbling but not truly abysmal offense. That obviously proved to be a great move and in many ways saved Coen’s ass imo. This year Coen stood pat knowing full well the horrific play on the defensive side of the ball. If the ship sinks it’s all on him…

Probably so but he’s not on the hot seat. D staff is tho. They will be gone. Botts has lots of valid reasons for last year. None of those apply this year.

I thought Lehigh finished a close third last year in PL play, no? So, if Lehigh’s D can be expected to improve even modestly, do we really think that HC will improve more and overtake LU? I think CSJ is holding true to form and downplaying LU to avoid the appearance of bias.

If we had even a remote semblance of a defense last year, there was a good chance that Lehigh places better than third.

This feels like setting the bar low.

It’s hard to believe the D could, once again, be as bad as it’s been the last 3 years. On the other hand, it’s also hard to believe that we are going into this season with the same coaches and scheme. Only time will tell if Andy made the right decision to maintain the status quo.

lets look at last year stats

Colgate, Fordham, and Lehigh were 5,6,7 in the Patriot League in total defense

Bucknell was first in total defense

So- what I am saying is – if Lehigh can get total defense numbers down 100 yards-(this is not unrealistic)
I could see them winning the Patriot League or least making the playoffs

Also-to note once again you now have 4 years of scholarship players on both sides of the ball- players need to step up and start playing-

The caveat is everyone else does oo.
Team that finds a D or an for Bison will likely win title.
Leery of being optimistic on our D after the ladt 4 yrs. Been optimistic before. Do think our D will be much better. Athletes and size are there. 2nd year in system. Building confidence is the key. Win or lise D hast come out of OOC with confidence in the system and themselves.

    Mark this down

I think you are going to see a more emotional defense that plays with intensity-

    That is a gut feeling!-

More pressure on the quarterback and much much better against the run-

Probably so. Andy emphasized installing new blitz packages in the Spring. For variius reasons Botts called a read and react D way to often last season. 3-3-5 is not geared for that type of D. My guess he may have had little choice with all the injuries on the back end. Multiple position switches and way too many frosh forced on the field.
This unit has been at rock bottom for years.Botts has to eliminate indecisive play and missed assignments. One positive taleaway from last year is the fact that D did have long stretches of solid play in games. Big plays abd poor tackling negated most of the solud play.

I certainly hope so, especially considering we have another year of Chase Edmonds to worry about.

Good question LG. Not sure but I think right answer is everybody. Unit execution of schemes and tackling appear to be the issues to be fixed.
Undividually? Mitchell needs to stay healthy this year at NG. Lambert at SS is the key guy in the back. At LB, Caslow is our key. Cant really ask him to stand up as he already has evey year. Guess Barrett or Harvey at Rover. Or anyone else Botts puts there. A lot of what 3-3-5 calls for hinges on the Rover.
