Under Bobby V, Sacred Heart has been expanding their athletics program in leaps and bounds. Doubters (like, initially, myself) thought that his lack of understanding of college athletics would be a hamper to their athletics department. Not so. They are expanding facilities, adding sports, and getting funds. I think it’s fair to say they’re on the rise.
Academically, they are at 57% acceptance – not ideal for a PL school. But they offer a lot of sports – 31 of them – and there is a lot of overlap with Patriot League schools. (For that matter, they are also in EIWA in wrestling and ACHA in hockey – which both have PL members in it too.)
Athletically, Sacred Heart looks pretty good for a PL school. Academically, they need to improve. Overall, are they a possibility?July 19, 2016 at 4:36 pm #27242
I grew up in Fairfield CT and I still remember when Sacred Heart was a High School. In my opinion, their academics leave way too much to be desired.July 19, 2016 at 4:46 pm #27243

I remember too when SHU was a tiny school not that far from Stamford, where I used to live. “There’s a D-I school up the street from me?” I remember saying to someone.
Today, though, I think that’s changed. Whether they stay in the NEC or are a consideration for the PL, ever, I have to give serious props to Bobby V for what he’s done there in a very short period of time.July 19, 2016 at 4:59 pm #27244
Sacred Heart is a weak school academically. The only thing they bring to the table is a football team. If the PL ever gets that desperate for another football member, they’d be better off adding a football-only member like Duquesne (assuming Villanova is not available). Adding an 11th all-sports member would not produce any positive effect – unless it was William and Mary, which is not likely to happen. Even then, every addition makes it that much harder for every PL member to get to the NCAA’s in every sport. No reason to add a bad academic school that brings nothing to the table.
