2020-21 Season Thoughts

Post by jdalu75 » Thu Jul 02, 2020 11:37 am

Since we've all but admitted that there's not much to talk about right now, here's a start on the possibilities of the next season. The last I heard is that coaches are probably going to schedule normally until told to do something different. But that was some time ago now, before TCNJ canceled fall sports and Yale announced that they'll have freshmen on campus in the fall and sophs in the spring.

So --

Let's for the moment not discuss the possibility of an outright cancellation of the 2020-21 wrestling season (and of course all other winter sports). That's the worst-case scenario and we don't want to go there yet.

What are the chances that there are no competitions at all in November?

What are the chances that there are no competitions in December? This would mean a mid-January until NCAAs season, basically half a year for most teams. Going to have to modify the RPI numbers to allow for fewer bouts.

What are the chances that wrestling and other sports resume only in areas that have been diligent in tamping down Covid-19? This would be the New England states, NY, NJ, DE, MD, probably PA. VA's doing pretty well but many of the rural counties are seeing outbreaks now -- not many cases total but a big increase in the percentages. The EIWA might be able to compete provided the teams don't travel out of the area. Would the NCAA hold a championship tournament if only the EIWA teams, Rider, Rutgers, and Buffalo could attend?

Lehigh's supposed to wrestle at Arizona State this coming season but I doubt that trip would take place if the dual were tomorrow. Lots of other eastern schools have to be looking at things like that too. We have teams planning on going to Vega$, Princeton at Iowa in early December .... they'd better buy refundable plane tickets.

imho... with the way Covid-19 is busting out all over the west & south (plus given how most human nature may play out,) I would say that we wouldn't see any action until after Jan 1.

... and that's a BIG if! :|
Stay safe... social distance... quityerbeefin and mask up!

And pray that the scientist and researchers will quickly find a safe and effective vaccine. :)

... and Happy 4th of July to you all! ;)

And good news bad news on that subject.
Good- very promising results from early tests for one of them (Moderna?).
Bad- Even though people were talking about having possibly a few hundred million by start of 2021, this one needs 2 doses.

Not the worst news going. The new-ish shingles vaccine takes two; so does the chickenpox vaccine. I don't know how many times I was vaccinated for polio; at least two Salk shots and at least a couple of Sabin sugar cubes. It'll probably mean one now and the second in three months.

I think Hepatitis B was 2 shots a month apart, and a 3rd 6 months later

Although it isn't the worst thing that wasn't the point. It will take longer to vaccinate the public. First, because you have to wait some period of time between doses and because we have to wait longer to produce what is needed since twice as much is needed.

I got that, but it still only delays things a couple of months. Means the US needs 660 million doses, not 330 million, but the drug companies view that as a feature, not a bug. Companies are already gearing up to produce large quantities (thanks to the feds absorbing the liability) in the event their drug is approved; that step normally is held off until after FDA approval.

I still expect that the first to be vaccinated will be first responders and medical workers; after that high-risk individuals. The healthy among us will be last in line.

Attended an interesting MountainTalk webinar about a week ago with a vaccine expert. He indicated having the vaccine and knowing the correct dosage for individuals is only part of the battle. There is the matter of navigating the supply chain of vials and syringes too when the entire world will be bidding for whatever comes down the line.

>>>. Would the NCAA hold a championship tournament if only the EIWA teams, Rider, Rutgers, and Buffalo could attend?

... Will elephants fly in time to make the event if held?

... And given how hard it's been for the U.S. to generate adequate testing, I wouldn't count on great success handling hundreds of millions of vaccines in a timely fashion

I will be shocked if NCAA gives the green light for fall sports. Even more shocked if they allow attendance.
