Week-End Salvo
Week-End Salvo
About what was expected.....The kid Lane lost to was Big 10 #2 seed so not a big surprise. The thing about Lane--he has little from neutral but once he gets his hands on you or is involved in a scramble -- look out. Logan showed a lot of heart against the #15 guy from App State. Nice win. Kerkvliet is very, very good. Wood is just not at his level. No shame in that. Hopefully he gets on a run. Looks like he has a reasonable path to R12 where he face the loser of Gremmel and Hillger.
It's s tough ass tournament where 95% of the entrants are built like brick outhouses. If you don't bring your horsepower, you will struggle to finish. Everything is important, but these days #1 requisite is strength.
I'm betting Bucknell's Hartman takes out Mekhi Lewis, if he even takes the mat. Other quarter final bouts of interest: (by weight) LaMont over Latona, DeSanto over Phillippi, Woods over Wilson, Murrin over Lewallen, Berge over Dellavecchia fueling PSU's surge, Hartman over Lewis --[Griffith and Marinelli rated a toss-up], in the Battle of the Romero's, I'll take Kaleb over Demetrius, Bolen over Keckeisen, Warner over Ferrari, Cassioppi over Schultz.
Toughest/deepest weight: 141, 165, 197.
Lehigh's team fought hard, wrestled hard and did about as well as expected. Like I said, bringing a ton of freshmen without the experience or strength to match this field was a daunting task. In my view, LU wrestled well.
Do not sleep on Penn State. This is not over by a long shot. In fact, I'd be surprised if Iowa ends up winning. Key quarterfinal bouts that will impact team race: 141 DeSanto/Phillippi, 149 Murrin/Lewallen, 157 Berge/Dellavecchia, 165 maybe the biggest of all Marinelli/Griffith, 197 Warner/Ferrari, 285 Cassioppi/Schultz. Watch these 6 bouts.
Wouldn't it be great if it came down to 174 finals between Kemmerer and Starocci?
Have a great weekend.

Re: Week-End Salvo
Yes of course it's about what was expected and maybe Lehigh ends up with one or two AA's and finishes in the top 20. Let's all celebrate.
Re: Week-End Salvo
I don't celebrate a Blue Ribbon for every participant stuff. There are only 79 teams in NCAA D1. Finishing 20th is Top 25%.
Last time Top 10 was 2012, only 9 years or 2 full recruiting classes ago.
Last time Top 5 was 2004, only 17 years or a generation ago.
LEHIGH has some work to do. Not getting it done.

Re: Week-End Salvo
For future discussion, but next year's lineup will be really interesting....If Lane and Hines get stronger hard to believe they can hold 125 and 133 respectively......Paetzell and Humphreys back? Does Jakobsen come back? Does Wood come back? Is Ruth an option, is he a 184? Who wrestles 165 and 174? Will Jimmy Hoffman have 2 legs at this time next year? Basically every weight is a question mark in my opinion.
I can't remember a Lehigh team in a long time with so many weights a complete question mark and who will be in the room such an unknown. Sure covid, but wow......

The 2020 team had a realistic shot at making top 10, the following seeds:HFO wrote: ↑Fri Mar 19, 2021 1:05 pm I don't celebrate a Blue Ribbon for every participant stuff. There are only 79 teams in NCAA D1. Finishing 20th is Top 25%.

Paetzell #7
Farro #18,
Pomrinca #31
Hoffman #28
Humphreys #6
Kutler #3
Weiler #13
Jakobsen #19
Wood #9
WrestleStats' simulated tourney had Lehigh placing 12th with Paetzell going 1-2.

Re: Week-End Salvo
you can bitch about recruiting all you want but aside from having a top flight coaching staff and a great room, we lose badly on price.
the price tag at Lehigh - unless you're one of the full rides (v rarely do we full ride anyone)- is not even close anymore compared to what the state schools paying stipends and with annual costs well under half of LU's can deliver a top flight wrestler.
Look at the top 25 teams and see how many are private schools with price tags of 70k.
Price matters.

Re: Week-End Salvo
Shane Griffith is some kind of tough. Wish he would transfer to LU now that Stanford has dropped the sport.
Re: Week-End Salvo
I expect he would work out better than the last 6 year senior from Stanford.
