It looks like Cardenas had a very different game plan and actually took a lot of shots. In their early match ups I remember Beard often scored on those.
Cardenas got quick TD, and was aggressor early.

Beard seemed to show respect (good or not) but couldn't get his TD machine working.

Then altered strategy and rode Cardenas for entirety of 2nd of period to get key RT point.

Can't remember last time Beard got an entire period ride-out, especially against caliber of Cardenas

Then TD game back on in OT for 6-3 W.

Come tournament time, good to see one win over highly ranked opponent when "A-game" isn't working.

[I was a little surprised too, especially since Beard had the advantage of a med forfeit in the semi's while cardenas had to go 7 minutes with deprez. Beard is notorious for being "off" come tournament time HOWEVER he did what he had to do tonight. Maybe Mike started slow on purpose to avoid the drop-off we sometimes have seen. It's also possible Cardenas was "off" during the dual and this was a more representative performance. Doesn't really matter - he toughed out the W and that shows BIG progress in this dude who is already crazy talented. Awesome.

Tournament-time, wrestlers at time seem to wrestle more conservatively "not-to-lose".

Both Crookham and Beard got taken down early (when's the last time that happened to either), and seemed to kind of light a fire under their butts.

And wonder for Beard, if sitting around all-day with-no on-mat action thinking about the championship bout with Cardenas affected performance in finals a bit.

>>>>>Not fair to say three weights were the issue when Logan placed 5th at 165—— with adv and bonus points he contributed north of 10 team points. The key to the team finish was cu placing 9 guys to our 8.

All four individual champs should earn good seeds at the NCAAs. Really looking forward to seeing what they can achieve.

Sportsmanship Award went to Hofstra.

Crookham won OW.

Lou DePrez won the Fletcher Award for most career points scored at the EIWAs.

Taylor won the Sheridan Award for most championship brackets falls in least time.

For some time now it hasn't been possible to win EIWAs with an 8-man team. Those days are over.

I think 2016 was the time that we scored 160 and took second. I didn't think it was possible, practically speaking, to score that many points and not win -- for certain, scoring that many would block any other team from scoring more. At the post-tournament dinner Pat Santoro said pretty much the same thing.

We did it again tonight. We were five points behind Cornell and 64 ahead of Army -- that's the points three champions earn. You need ten contributors, you need eight semifinalists and six finalists, and you still need for nobody better to show up.

/Maybe if Wilt didn’t get an awful seed he would have made up those points but that’s luck of the draw,. /As someone said, great tournament and great team for nationals

Thought Taylor had TF, MD, Dec, and Fall in finals.

Looking back, guess I saw semi-final score as 6-1 vs. Fernandes - which was before Taylor recorded fall. So with two pins in 3:55, makes sense.

As of now, am thinking top three seeds for Stanich, Crookham, Beard, top 6 for Taylor . . .

JDA,

Given your knowledge and history with EIWA, do you think next year without the Ivy's will still take more than an 8-man team to win it?

Maybe for some other of the remaining schools, but am thinking LU can do it with 6-7, given usual mix of champs/placers?
