20-21 Lineup if we have a Season

Post by HFO » Mon Nov 02, 2020 1:34 pm

Given winter sport student-athletes who compete during 2020-21 in Division I will receive both an additional season of competition and an additional year in which to complete it. Do you take a COVID year and just train for your best athletes? :?

For discussion purposes only!

My take is that you wrestler near all 5th years (unless they have shot at AA by sitting out) then progress down to fill weights by non-starters by class year. Use the year for training and development.

125 Resnick - JR sit out Paetzell
133 Farro - SR sit out Lane
141 Loebeck - SR or best man standing. Highly contested.
149 Karam - SR sit out Hoffman
157 Cooley - JR sit out Humphreys
165 Meyer - JR or best man standing. Still not so many bodies at this weight.
174 Cornish - SR or best man standing. Nearly everyone is a sophomore or younger.
184 Ammerman - SR He's quite good. Truly Academics first and wrestling 2nd. Spent 4 years behind some good wrestlers.
197 Jakobsen - SR
285 - Lacombe - JR Wood Olympic year.
A mix of men whom some have seen varsity action but are at end of their careers.

Then come back 2021-2022
125 Paetzell
133 Lane
141 Moran or best man standing
149 Hoffman
157 Humphreys
165 Lawrence or best man standing
174 Ruth or best man standing
184 Logan or best man standing
197 Need a big time recruit this year
285 Wood

3 AA candidates, good shot at all EIWA placewinners and NCAA qualifiers.
NCAA coaches have big decisions to be made this year. Definitely a Top 10 Team. Could push for a Top 5 team.

I humbly disagree; you put the best line-up out there. However, I also think 50% chance we start season in Jan. 20% chance we have EIWAs & NCAAs.

This is such a crazy year, but I thought everyone gets a free year this time? So why would anyone not participate? They would lose that free year, which it seems like the reason for their decision. Does anyone really know ?

My guess is that scholarship money for those deferring and/or taking Olympic years was re-allocated, so if those wrestlers choose to compete they'll have to pay their own way.

Agree with JDA's theory. It shouldn't be high on our radar to fund 6 years regardless of the circumstances. Move on with life. It's the next guy's turn.

Thanks guys, guess that supports the old saying that 9.9 is for suckers. Was hoping that Humphreys would wrestle 3 straight years instead of sitting out. I would guess the Cornell guys will be all in.

I’ve bit my tongue on responding to this thread, waiting/hoping someone would post the obvious response to this. This year, if there is a season, would be a free year for anyone. So why not wrestle your best!!! Why sit anyone when the year does not count against eligibility. By sitting you are burning a free year, which to me seems to be obvious. I’d wrestle your best 10, and I’m sure the school can help figure out funding. Wrestle your best! Paetzell, Farro/Lane, whoever wins at 141, Hoffman, Humphreys, Lawrence/Ruth/Logan/whomever wins at 65-84, Jake and Jordan.

If I am missing something please let me know. But again, since this is a FREE year for eligibility, why sit anyone who could place?

What you're missing is that the NCAA announced the free year after teams and wrestlers had already made their plans for the coming season; and that this announcement comes in a season of slashed budgets. Wrestlers had already decided to skip the year, aid had already been re-allocated, and then the NCAA made their announcement, in some cases two months after fall classes had begun.

I spoke with one EIWA coach in August about greyshirting and redshirting and he asked "Why wouldn't you do it?" He said everyone on his team who could defer was going to; which was going to help his program a ton since his budget for 2020-21 had been cut drastically.

So the year is free only in the sense that it doesn't count against eligibility. It's certainly not free in terms of the impact on the family finances or program resources.

Then there's the little matter of school rules, conference rules, etc. If a guy stays in school an extra year he might graduate while he still has eligibility remaining, problems like that. The Ivies don't allow graduate students to wrestle, Bucknell doesn't redshirt except in incredibly rare circumstances. The Power Five will figure a way to work it out, the rest of the world won't.
