Kicking

Back-to-back PL champs 2016 and 2017.... but need to get back to relevance in the national FCS scene.

Kicking

Post by TMH » Sat Dec 11, 2021 11:29 am

At the beginning of this past season, I thought that one of our real question marks would be place kicking. We certainly have enough kickers on the roster but most were primarily punters who could also place kick. So I was pleasantly surprised by this set of stats.

Dylan Van Dusen

10 of 12 (83%) field goals made with a longest of 42 yds. Both misses were in the Fordham game. 13 of 13 extra points.

By comparison
Derek Ng- Holy Cross-1st team all PL

10 of 17 (59%) field goals made with a longest of 50. Extra point information unavailable.

Micah Pettit-Lafayette-2nd Team All-P/L

10 of 15 (67%) field goas made with a longest of 49. Again, I can't find info on extra points.
Ironically Pettit was 5 of 5 from 40-49 but only 5-10 from inside the 40.

Suddenly IMHO, what I thought may be a weakness is really a strength. The voters in the PL obviously placed a higher value on leg strength than accuracy. I'm not in that school however.

Just a thought.

Ng was 53 of 54.

Pettit was 20 of 20.

Ng seems superior, but Van Dusen had a great year with limited (not his fault) action.

Ng having 10 attempts of 40+ likely skews this data. Is Simpson in transfer portal?

Van Dusen made great strides this year. Was just a few inches from being perfect on his FG attempts. Obviously, having a 'big' leg that makes scoring a threat from 50 yards out is nice, but any decent offense should be able to frequently get to the 30, yielding a 47 yard FG. If he can add another solid 5-10 yards to his distance he becomes a real weapon. Also, watch Reinhard kid from Northampton. Coaches liked the way he 'grew' this year (frosh) and let him do the KO's the last two games.
