Post by RichH » Tue Feb 01, 2022 3:33 pm

By my count 75 returning on roster.

Currently 9 signed and 7 verbals.

TG predicted a class of 18.
A number of unknowns.
Any seniors taking a covid year at LU ?
How many squad players will quit?
Has the PL de facto modified the roster cap?

TE 1
OL 3
RB 1
WR 2
QB 0

DL 4
LB 2
DB 3

More on Brayten:

Scottsdale Chaparral senior Brayten Silbor, ranked by The Arizona Republic as the No. 1 quarterback in the 2021 high school football season, announced on social media Tuesday that he'll be committing to the New Mexico Lobos.

New Mexico was one of the few Division I football offers he had. He was also offered by Northern Arizona, and Ivy League Pennsylvania and Columbia.

Silbor, 6-foot-3, 205 pounds, was vastly under-recruited after leading the Firebirds to the 6A championship last season. He only played eight games last season because COVID-19 reduced the season and the Firebirds started out having to cancel their first three games because of COVID-19 protocols.

Still, he passed for 2,348 yards and 18 touchdowns, completing 65% of his passes. He ran for 215 yards and four scores.

Instead of taking the Brock Purdy route and playing through his senior season, and hoping Power 5 offers then come, Silbor decided to commit before the start of his senior year.

"I love the atmosphere and the relationships that the coaches have with the players, and the one I am developing with them," he said. "I just thought New Mexico felt right after my visit early June.

"I finished all the camps I attended and I want to go into my senior season not having to worry about finding a home and focus on trying to get my second ring."

Silbor attended camps at the University of Arizona, Stanford, SMU and Tulsa this summer. No offers came out of those.

He was outstanding in the first big 7-on-7 passing tournament during the Memorial Day weekend, when he led Chaparral to the championship game against Chandler, which pulled out a close win.

"He didn't want to wait around," Chaparral coach Brent Barnes said. "If they didn't want to offer him, he didn't want to wait around for them. Huge congrats to New Mexico for getting out there and taking the offer. They're getting an excellent quarterback."

With no in-person recruiting for 18 months, college coaches weren't able to see Silbor in person during Chaparral games or the last two springs.

The quarterback position goes fast in commitments.

Silbor is the third Arizona high school quarterback from the 2022 class to commit. Chandler Hamilton's Nicco Marchiol, rated No. 2 in the state at the position by The Republic, has committed to West Virginia. Goodyear Desert Edge's Adryan Lara committed before his junior season to Washington State.

"When you see him operate on time with his system, and he's so accurate, it's hard to show that at a camp," Barnes said. "I think some of these things certainly come into play. It's a great opportunity to go to New Mexico and compete at a high level. I think at the end of the day he was able to get out and see other places and talk to other people.

"I got great feedback from people who saw him. But, again, whether there were others on the board, in-state guys, he wasn't one to wait until the very end."

Mike Giovando, Silbor's personal quarterback coach, believes the last two spring football seasons hurt Silbor because college coaches weren't able to come out and see him practice in person.

"I definitely think New Mexico got themselves an FBS (top NCAA I division) quarterback for sure," Giovando said. "I feel bad for him because a lot of the 2022 quarterbacks really didn't get the opportunity to get recruited for the pure fact that these coaches weren't allowed to come out here and see them last spring and this spring.

"But you know he's got a chance to play at New Mexico and he's going to do great things."

Giovando believes Silbor will continue to get recruited until he signs his letter of intent. There are two signing periods, in December and February.

"He's an outstanding kid and he deserves everything that comes his way," Giovando said.
