Season Recap

Post by grad81 » Tue May 10, 2022 11:32 am

A disappointing end to a season that could have been a special one despite all of the injuries at the outset. Losing 4 of the last 5 games by a goal (three in OT) was tough to take. Ultimately the team's inability to clear the ball and unforced turnovers were their undoing. The PL semifinal game against BU was a perfect example. Win the face off in OT but muff a simple exchange behind the goal, get a stop on defense, but then try for a home run against the ten man ride, don't back it up and then lose without ever getting a single shot. Fixing the clearing game next year has to be a top priority, especially since it hurt them last season as well.

That said, this team played hard and with a lot of heart. Unfortunately they had trouble putting together a complete four quarter game for much of the season. The PL tournament win against Navy was their best complete game of the year. 7 of the 15 games they played were decided by one goal and they won only two of those. My personal feeling was that if they had gotten by BU, they would have beaten Army again and won the title.

Turning to next season, they have some big holes to fill but have a lot of returning talent. James Spence in goal was outstanding, especially the second half of the season and Teddy Leggett is really the heart and soul of the team. Both will be hard to replace. Hopefully a number of kids will return for a 5th year, specifically Schelling, Kirst, Tangredi, Hagenberger, Hicks. Sisselberger and Marker I believe have already said they are returning. The team has a number of talented young SSDM's who emerged during the season. Close D and replacing Schelling, who really was fantastic the second half of the year, and Kirst if they don't come back will be key. Scott Cole had a breakout year at midfield and with Tiernan and Sidorski coming back from injury next season, they should have a lot of goal scoring potential. Tiernan being able to come back this year from his ACL injury and play the way he did was remarkable.

Lots of ifs, buts, almosts ...sprinkled throughout the season. Injuries hurt early on but consistency was our issue all season. As you say,if we return the eligible we will be talented and experienced. We need more consistent focus for whole games not just in bursts.
