Bucknell Games 5 & 6

Game Notes are up!
Get on them as each is a “good read.”

Meeks too!
If Andrew Funk wasn’t enough to worry about, now we have John Meeks, as well. The Bison Board is reporting that the 6’6” Senior Power Forward is ready to return to the lineup after injury.

Quick Stat Review of Each
#10 Funk (G)….this year: 35.3mpg….13.3ppg….4.0rpg…..944FT%
#12 Meeks (F)….last year: 11.2mpg….11.2ppg….5.3rpg…..786 FT%

Slow Sad Start
No one said this was gonna be easy. We’re off to a shaky 1-3 Mini Conference start and, like nearly all others (must exclude AWP and Navy) in the PL, we’re 0-0 in what has been, in prior years, the all-important Out of Conference segment of play. You could argue that missing those 10-12 games is like missing a year of basketball for us - a team so light on experience. Yes, all teams face the same problem. But, not every team walks onto the court equal in experience. LU happens to win this one hands down, with a squad comprised of 14 players split 6-5-2-1 (Fr – So – Jr - Sr). In true game experience (minutes played to date) the split is: 54.3% (So + Fr) and 45.1% (Jr + Sr).

Other LU stats of interest

Unbalanced Point Distribution
3’s 15.1% …. 345th ranked yet hitting at a rate 34.1% which is 4th best in PL
2’s 71.1% …. Tops in the nation
FT 13.3% …. 328th in nation and 7th in PL

Woeful Percentages
Free Throws….. 66.7% or 328th in nation / 6th in PL
Offensive Rebounds ….. 19.5% or 326th in nation / 6th in PL
3PA/FGA ….. 17.9% or 345th in nation / 8 in PL…yet, as stated above, we hit 34.1% of our attempts
(Maybe it’s time to let ‘em fly, Coach. Our better marksmen to date include: J. Wilson @ .600, J. Betlow @ .500 and M.Wilson @ .417)

Eyeing a playoff berth?
Far-fetched? Perhaps, but maybe not. The League has announced that 12 teams will compete in post-season Championship play beginning on March 6. Surely, the winner of our mini-conference will get an invite. The urgency is now, knowing that three of our next four weekends of play (6 of 8 games) pit us against conference rivals. For starters, let’s put Bucky in the rearview mirror this weekend. Oh yeah, Pomeroy doesn’t see that happening. Instead, he’s eyeing a split with each team winning on their home court.

Central Mini Conference Standings
LC 3-1
LU 1-3
BUCKY 0-4
Oh yeah, Mr. Pomeroy sees us losing by 4 on Saturday and winning by 1 on Sunday.

Eight teams will make the playoffs. The winners of the three mini-conferences will get the top three seeds (in order of record, with tiebreakers if necessary). The three second place teams will get seeds 4-6. And the remaining teams with the top records will be seeds seven and eight.

Correcting a typo: Meeks averaged 27.1 mpg. What is probably more meaningful are his PL stats: 30.2 mpg, 12.6 ppg, 6.5 rpg, .854 FT%. Prior to PL season, he normally was a sub. He has missed a few weeks with a fairly serious concussion, so it is unclear how much or how well he will play.

Thanks Bison 137 for the typo correction and, more importantly, the detailed and accurate report of the League's Playoff structure. Should be fun, like always.

don't see this team having much success with Betlow at PG, little contribution on the offensive end and not much on D either

Atrocious 1st half. Team fought hard. Credit their effort.
Fatal flaw we can nether shoot 3s, 3/12 25% nor defend against them 15/25 60%.

I know it’s not the case, but it looked to me like the team walked straight from the bus to the court to begin play yesterday. How else des one account for their dismal play? With 7:20 to go in the first half we had racked-up 11 whole points and committed 7 personal fouls. The misguided shots – especially from long-range continued until halftime. The distant tallies told the score. LU: 0-7 / Bucky: 7 -14. Most of us (I know I did) probably began thinking about tomorrow.

Can we see more of Sinclair at the point? After watching Betlow and Fenton go a combined 2 for 9 in 42 minutes of play, perhaps the time is now or long-pasted. As for Sunday, can we hope that Funk comes down to Earth (8 boards and 18 points on 7 for 12 shooting) and we see more of the same out of the Wilson’s – both M. and J.- along with a revitalized ET (4 for 9 and 6 boards) in Bethlehem? Throw in a solid showing from Lynch and some threes (how about just 3 out of 10) falling from the wings, and we might have something to talk about on Monday.

P.S. Pomeroy nailed the Bison win yesterday. Let’s hope he’s right to today with his pick of LU by 1.

Pom was a bit off unfortunately
An L. 77-61
Taylor played well. 15 pts
Stats overall fairly even except , of course 3s. Meeks dominated this game.

My uninformed takeaway is that the Bucknell teams played better than yesterday. We did not.
