Game 2 - VA Tech

Post by lehigh90 » Thu Nov 10, 2022 9:42 am

Pretty quick turnaround against a second Power 5. Expect another long night here.

Goals

Defend - keep them under 75
Rebound - keep differential under 10

Shoot - 45+ from field, 35+ from 3, 80+ from line
Get 3-4 guys in double figures
At least +10 on assists vs turns

Keep it in single digits.

VT won home opener by 40 vs Del St. Line at -23 for tonight. If a bettor, I take Hokies.

The game will be on ACC network main feed tonight. Will we improve our play compared to the Syracuse game? If we have a pedestrian game and do not cover, I’ll be disappointed. And revising my expectations for the year. Kenpom thinks the line should be +28. Not a great omen…..

Another concern is Purple Pard performance Monday in Miami. New coach, new level of play for the folks in Easton.

Down 18 at half. Not a great effort.

Down 56 - 37.
To top that, these announcers are awful.

Ugh. I understand that VaTech is not exactly chopped liver, but this was well below my expectations. I know we are trying different combinations, but…. Alamudun our lone bright spot. And based on other Patriot league results so far, it’s gonna be a long season.

The most disappointing thing in those first two games is how badly we shot open 3s. Both games would have been competitive with better shooting. I think, like many college coaches, Brett just doesn't prioritize good shooting enough. The guys who can actually shoot need to see most of the time at the three guard slots.

The team also needed an experienced center this year with some legitimate length and/or bulk.

Don’t think we have too many knock down shooters on the roster. Only guy who is 40% for career from 3 is Taylor. Couple guys in low 30’s. It’s an issue. Shooting should be easier to find.

I’m pretty worried about the front court. Not getting a ton of production at the moment. Although in fairness, vs Power 5 we are outsized. I think I’d go smaller lineup in PL with Parolin at 5. Alamudun should probably be starting in PL. Not sure if Tan long term plan or out of necessity vs big teams we’ve seen.
