Retherford gets pulled into repechage, but he'll have to wrestle FOUR times (AND win them ALL) to go into Paris this summer.
Action will start tomorrow morning... check w/FLO when the streaming starts (I'm thinking 8am, BUT CHECK 1st!)

It is as real as it get, so wishing him well. Tough road ahead Alibegov (Bahrain, by way of Russia), Abdulmazhid Kudiev(Tajikistan, by way of Russia), and Sujeet (India), who had claimed gold medals in Asian under-23 and Asian under-20 championships and big win over Yanni.

Repechage #1 – WIN Alibeg Alibegov (Bahrain), fall, 2:37
Retherford opened up the scoring at the 45-second mark with a front headlock toss for four points. He was countered with exposure by Alibegov during the exchange, resulting in a 4-2 score in favor of Retherford. Upon returning to neutral standing, Retherford countered an Alibegov knee pick attempt for his first chance on top, and he made the most of it. Retherford went back to his folkstyle roots, throwing in a boot on the right side, tilting Alibegov three times before sliding off the boot into a half nelson for the fall in 2:37.

Repechage #2 – WIN Abdulmazhid Kudiev (Tajikistan), 5-2
Retherford shot in on a single leg right off the whistle, eventually driving Kudiev out-of-bounds for a point. Kudiev got in deep on a single leg attempt but was unable to score due to Retherford’s solid scrambling. Retherford capitalized on Kudiev’s persistent attacks on his right leg with a timely re-shot single leg, adding on two more points before the break. Retherford picked up a strong double leg takedown 30 seconds into the second period to open up a 5-0 lead. He played the hand fight game the remainder of the match. Kudiev managed a takedown with 8 seconds left to bring the final score to 5-2.

One more to go. Getting past the two former Russians is a good sign. The India wrestler is elite so it will be another difficult match.

He actually had two more to go at that point. Traditional bronze 3/5 bout against Sujeet of India. And then the True 3rd bout for the Olympic berth against Skriabin an AIN participant from Belarus via Russia. Both of which he won.

The Asian Indians seem to be very good at wrestling. Not a country, notwithstanding its huge population, that excels in many sports. You can add cricket and field hockey. Any others?

There is a very large Indian American population in New Jersey which seems to be growing. You find lots of Indian American boys on the tennis courts but I think it very rare to find them on the mat. Wonder if it might catch on at some point.

Well, Retherford did it!

He ran the gauntlet of 4 wrestlers and he won 'em all ( toughest was Sanjeet from India, as he won 2-2 criteria)
He's going to Paris along w/ Lee.

I posted earlier that Tajik and Bahrain wrestlers are from Russia. If you look at Olympic Qualifier list, you see many Russians who wrestle for other countries. Americans with dual citizenships at quite a number of weights.

It is a new world of sports. Bahrain and UAE known to give a $1 million and an apartment for Olympic medalists. They are marketing for prestige on world stage. Next up will be Qatar.
