Mays in Taylor Stadium:

I was being facetious. It was odd Mays' birthday ended up as a topic on this forum.

Greatest ballplayer ever. There was absolutely nothing he couldn't do on a ballfield. Great defense, cannon for an arm, speed on the basepaths, hit for power, hit for average. A real joy to watch him play.

And great baseball instincts.

Roger Angell once kiddingly referred to the Giants' secret trick play to catch basestealers. When the runner on first broke for second, the catcher would throw wild past second base so that Mays could throw out the runner trying to advance to third.

The ultimate MLB defensive tribute:

"Center field in the Polo Grounds ... where fly balls go to die, in Willie Mays' glove"

I can't remember which famous writer wrote that.

Where triples go to die, actually as regards Mays. A Dodger's executive. (I had to look that up).
The general quote is used a lot for various people and places.

Sportswriter Jim Murray. Took me about 20 seconds to google the quote: https://www.quotetab.com/quote/by-jim-m ... -go-to-die

Since baseball is in full swing another phrase I loved about another former Giant and Phils outfielder, Garry Maddox . “Two thirds of the world is covered by water, the rest is covered by Garry Maddox”
