2021-22 TENTATIVE LU SCHEDULE

Post by drd5748 » Thu Jun 24, 2021 11:01 pm

It's too early to firm up, as always, but Pat has offered this early/interim/tentative version.
Before any skeptics jump to conclusions, ASU, PSU, Cornell, Okla St are locks for Top 10 and Pitt might be.
Princeton, Navy, Army are a lot tougher than recent years & re all likely Top 10 before any surprise additions.
Certainly very few breathers.

Thanks, DRD. Any info as to whether the possible 12/21-22 all day duals would be home or away?

Pitt dual at home, same time as Lehigh Lafayette at Goodman??????

Can Garcia Weigh in at halftime of the football game and get to Grace before his bout?

Always thought Jake Jacobsen should have played football. He was an outstanding QB in high school.

Was Jakobsen D1 material as a QB?

I've heard he was very good, but how good would you guess? D1, D1AA, DII, DIII?

No, I have no idea which teams might fill the question mark duals; I'm most fascinated with the "Dec 21-22 Tues-Wed All-Day Duals"; not sure but sometimes PJS means "1 day or the other, not sure yet" ... the hyphen implies 2-day so I'll invite all forum blood hounds to keep an eye out for a possible calendar move for South Beach this yr.

My impression (duhh) is that the Scuffle and Midlands folks were extremely annoyed with the entrepreneurialism in FL, led by CU's Koll and MO's Smith. Moving it would win points while maximizing top tourney attractions.

I thought Jake achieved enough in wrestling that I'm glad he didn't choose football somewhere else, or at Lehigh. He had enough issues with knee, concussion and vision hurdles that doing both would have been prohibitive. I recall some forum wag insisting that he was better than any of our roster QBs. I laughed, having followed our guys since 1966. Their skill sets are often way better than some think since Kim McQuilken played 9 yrs as NFL backup (and Dan Nolan excelled 15 yrs earlier).

I recall having a beer with Fred Dunlap on the road around 1976; he stuck out his famous Marine jut jaw (looked like Joe Girardi) and said: "After we got Kim, I vowed we'd never go w/out a good QB again .... I'll recruit 5 of 'em every year if that's what it takes." I doubted he was exaggerating much

TMH knows our recent football history better than I do (by a lot) but if Brad Mayes struggled at our level then Jake was not a serious contender for LU QB. Jake was excellent in HS; Mayes was a phenom in HS and for parts of his LU career. Some stats out the wazoo.

I guess all good Lehigh wrestling fans should root for lousy football teams the next 4-5 years, so Garcia is released as early as possible for wrestling.

There was a great story in Sports Illustrated 30 or more years ago about Glenn Davis and Doc Blanchard, Mr. Outside and Mr. Inside for Army during the war years. Both men competed in multiple sports. On one occasion the Army baseball and track teams were competing at Navy on the same day. Davis played CF for the baseball team; with the first game of a doubleheader safely won, an Army staff car whisked Davis off the field to the track meet. He changed clothes in the back of the car, borrowed a pair of track spikes, and won the 100-yard dash in the track meet. Then the staff car got him back to the diamond in time for the second game of the DH.

Precedent.

Shouldn't be a problem. That path was already decided by the AD with his latest football HC hire.

Jake was a very good QB at Stroudsburg but I think only played his last 2 years there. IMO, he would have been a good FCS QB. The thing was Nick Shafnisky who ended up being Patriot League and ECAC Offensive POY in Jake's freshman year was already there. Brad Mayes (who had an outstanding career at Lehigh) prior to losing his OL in his senior season was already here. Jake's scholarship was for wrestling and he absolutely made the right move IMO.
Whoever said he would have been the best QB on the team was likely sadly mistaken.

Ironically, Gaige may face the same situation. Hopefully we will see how Allen and Hill can run behind a rebuilt offensive line but Lehigh has an outstanding recruit in Blake Hartman, who won every major award for an offensive player in West Virginia coming in too. Garcia and Hartman seem to have the same running style although Hartman may be bigger and stronger and played at a higher level in HS. It may make Garcia's decision for him.
