Week-End Salvo: Special Mid-Week Edition
Week-End Salvo: Special Mid-Week Edition
It appears '21-'22 may be a return to normalcy. We can only hope.
The biggest off season news all revolved around Cornell where NCAA runner-up and 2X AA Max dean transferred to eastern rival Penn State and head coach Rob Koll headed west to take over at near-dead Stanford. Yes, and Mike Grey of L'Affiare de Grey, takes the reins at Cornell.
Some observations:
Stanford returns 2 AAs including a champion and OW plus an R12. California is a tremendous wrestling state to recruit. It won't take long for Koll to rock the top 10.
Cornell will have a nice team this year but recruiting will drop off
Navy and Army are trending.
Princeton took a hit but still has a nice team
The Bing picked up a gem in Ryan Anderson
Lehigh is flying under the radar.
There are those who question whether LU will have an AA this coming year. Well, there's always a question since the tournament is so rugged. However, I don't believe LU will be blanked from the podium.
When even a casual observer looks at who is standing at the end (top 8) they are virtually all extremely physical and slapped together. The hand fighting, the pushing, the leaning on the head -- all work to fatigue an opponent. That all comes from strength training. Gable invented it: The Iowa Way. There are exceptions. Oklahoma State and Penn State both have athletes who are pretty darn slick but by and large the majority of AAs are animals. Hence .... "The Animal Show" (credit Legendary Navy coach Ed Peery)
If Lehigh wants AAs their guys have to lift, lift, lift. Be the biggest, baddest, MFer on the mat. That's how you convert attacks into points. We have seen it time and again. The good news is Pat Santoro knows this. He converted Maryland into a contender by making them more physical (and recruiting Hudson Taylor) -- Pat's done it at Lehigh as well. Our guys are no strangers to the weight room.
Here's an Oracle formula for NCAA success:
* Get strong
* Have endurance
* Be better from neutral
* Be able to get out from bottom
Riding is the last frontier. Probably not going to ride the best guys, or turn them on a consistent basis unless you are elite. The vast majority of the 80 AAs are not at Spencer Lee's level.
So, LU has a few AA candidates: Lane, Hines, Logan and maybe someone who has been doing things we are unaware of and is about to blossom.
BTW, I see the west about to surge. Arizona State, Cal Poly, Oregon State and now Standford are all trending.
Enjoy the 4th of July. America is the greatest country in the world.

Re: Week-End Salvo: Special Mid-Week Edition
Josh Humphreys is our best bet for AA and possible title.
P.S. Lehigh's weight room is substandard. The guys who are serious about hitting the weights all work out at area gyms.

Re: Week-End Salvo: Special Mid-Week Edition
Interesting that Oracle has omitted Humphreys and Wood from his list of AA candidates. How times change.
Re: Week-End Salvo: Special Mid-Week Edition
Have we forgotten Wood and Humphreys already?
Re: Week-End Salvo: Special Mid-Week Edition
I would daresay, that Humphreys would've trended to be on the podium after the EIWA's @ Stabler, prior to the Covid Lockdown. Same w/ Wood.
After this past abbreviated season & NCAA's, where Wood was knocked out AA contention (the nit's Kerkvliet major D'ing him even), next season would be a difficult try.
There's seem to be plethora of King Sized 285'ers now... it's mind boggling.
Since Humphreys was out/ injured this past season, it will be telling, in the first duals of '21-'22, on how the layoff/recovery affected him.

Re: Week-End Salvo: Special Mid-Week Edition
Paetzell? Saw on twitter he posted that he will be a six year, great day to be a hawk and so on back in late May..
But at what weight? If he is fully healthy again what is he shooting for?
125? 133? 141? Does Hines move to 141 and Paetzell wrestles 133? Paetzell goes 125, Lane 133? Lane 125, Hines 133, Paetzell 141? Going to be very interesting in the Lehigh lower weights next season......

Honestly.....forgot about Humphreys. Agree he is the best bet. And Jordan Wood is not to be counted out. 285 has become a loaded weight but experience and the right draw would help Wood to the podium again.

A month or two ago I reminded Cornell fans that Greg Diakomihalis will be wrestling for them this year. They were discussing lightweights and had forgotten about him.
It's been a weird off-season; in Cornell's case, it's also been a looooong off-season. Feels better than attributing our failing memories to advancing age.

Speak for yourself, JDA. I just hit the 3/4 century mark and my memory's just fine. But how come nobody mentioned Ryan Preisch as an AA candidate?jdalu75 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 30, 2021 5:19 pm A month or two ago I reminded Cornell fans that Greg Diakomihalis will be wrestling for them this year.
