Good discussion.

Interesting fact: Out of the last 43 NCAA Championships, 28 have been won by teams coached by 4 individuals, Gable, Sanderson, Smith and Brands. It becomes even more compelling when you consider that Zalesky (3) inherited Gable's juggernaut while at it's peak.

Those 4 coaches won 12 Sanderson (4), Gable and Brands (3) and Smith (2 + runnerup) individual championships as wrestlers.

Here is my take. In order to really succeed at wrestling, probably more than most sports is that the individual needs to be driven. As Mark Lieberman said, the sport is 80% mental. All 4 of the individuals mentioned were hyper-driven on the mat and that has transferred to the sidelines. Couple that with the almost unfair advantage the name recognition brings to recruiting and that breeds success.

I mention all this because IMO, Kyle Dake probably belongs on that Mount Rushmore of wrestling success due to drive. So even though mat success doesn't guarantee coaching success the ingredients are probably there to be very impactful at that next level.

Just my opinion.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Agree. IMO, he needs to finish his competitive career. It's probably why it looks to the casual fan like he's a little wound up on the sidelines. But there is no reason to think he won't be an outstanding head coach at some point....probably sooner than later if he doesn't compete beyond the upcoming Games.

Dake is a freak athlete. Incredible combination of athleticism and refusal to lose. Hoping he goes another Olympic cycle before coaching.

Amen to that, Mookster ... the Oo-Ess-A needs him awhile longer and $250k/gold helps feed his cute kids,

Good luck to O challenging the heavy bias in the sport toward medals, not just coaching stones.

But he can't lose, either, not with Missouri's medal-less Brian Smith (B1G 2nd for Mich St); he came out from under the water in Syracuse like a Polaris missile with the Tigers; an administrator of the Nth degree)

Try Goodale (Rutgers), Coach Pop (NCS) & the new Michigan coach. With 4 of the top 10, can you hear the big AHEM from John?

Medals aren't required but they sure helped interview odds. Leeman, Turner, Strobes, Pat all exceptional wrestlers. Hutch got caught in the cross-hairs of policy uncertainty more than coaching skills (Gimp & I will attend his Blair HOF next mo).

Would you mind putting that into plain language. That's the trend these days.

Plan language, whiz ?? Sure, why not?

>>Amen to that, Mookster ... the Oo-Ess-A needs him awhile longer and $250k/gold helps feed his cute kids,

... Agreed with mookie that the USA could use his skills for another Olympic cycle. Hopefully his prize for gold ($250k) is enough incentive to feed his cute, all-blonde household

.... 40% of the current Top 10 teams are coached by former wrestlers with less than sensational medal resumes

.... Tom Hutchinson (NCAA 6th at 197; injured in '71 semis to Ben Peterson) is the only full-time LU coach since Billy Sheridan not to be a college star, NCAA 2nd or better. In fact, Sheridan won 74 opens in Europe, was British Isles 1st and 6x Scottish national champ before emigrating to Philadelphia in 1910.
