Week-End Salvo

Post by Oracle » Fri Sep 17, 2021 11:48 am

Greetings to all college wrestling fans!!!

Here we are about a month away from certifications and I'm confident there will be a few surprises. When guys drop down, it can mean improvement but the evidence is a short list in that regard. It's the guys who lift, get bigger and stronger that seem to improve the most. To wit: Kemerer went up 2 weights from 157 to 174 (had to avoid Marinelli at 165) and was a beast. Realbuto went up 2 weights and thrived. Wattenberg went from 165 to 184 and did the same. If a guy has the frame to support it, lifting into a higher weight is a good strategy --IMO. Strength is the #1 attribute necessary to successfully execute and finish shots/attacks. It's also required in order to build RT, a 'free' point in every match that's up for grabs.

On another thread, mookie observed LU's lack of success recruiting #1 vs #2 kids while hosting in Grace Hall for about 9 years. While true, most of these recruits had decided prior to the event where they wanted to go. Pat's recruiting has been excellent. What's an issue -- and it may have more to do with academics -- is the number of LV studs that sign elsewhere -- almost all to Power 5 schools. Yes, a few go Ivy and one recently went to Navy. No one needs to tell the staff about this -- they are well aware. It's 'how to' stop it and keep these elite recruits local. An on-going puzzle to solve.

Tomorrow, the football team plays Princeton, an IVY opponent. I am asking wrestling fans that use this forum to post football comments on the Lehigh football forum. Asking nicely. PLease and thank you.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Start with the cost to attend. Why not vote stipends in at the EIWA in an effort to compete. Could be done by sport. Anything can technically be done if it wants/needs done badly enough.
Aside from that the cost to attend is insane and has been for a long time. As good as Pat & Co are (you could barely ask for a better steward of our program iMHho), they are terribly up against a huge net cost differential for the top dogs. Plus as discussed by MH and many others of late, does LU still have the cache to get the kids who want to level up academically? Is that the perception for Lehigh among recruits? Do the kids perceive it? Huge work to be done by the conference and the school if remaining competitive with the Power 5’s. Perhaps those days are gone forever.
MH hoping for a healthy season. Could be some surprises because for once it seems expectations may be closer to reality than in some long time.
MH looking fwd to posting about the excellent performance of the footballers v Princeton this weekend. In a court of law it’s relevant in that it goes to who our AD is in the end. That bears on the wrestling team also. Skip any posts u like as is your RIGHT!

Mostly agree with the above, but I'll point out that when Realbuto went up two weight classes, Palacio went down a weight class and subsequently got his two AA results.

I'm sure that whatever weight classes end up, a healthy Lehigh lineup will be a tough match for everyone. Except Penn State, of course.

If memory serves, Palacio beat Realbuto as high school seniors, but suspect Realbuto won his 157 spot once they got to Ithaca. So Palacio's best weight may have been 157 all along. Realbuto clearing out made it an option that Palacio cashed in on.

>>>>>>> Actually after some quick research, it was at 2012 Eastern States finals at 152 -- Palacio dropped down and beat Realbuto in the finals -- quite handily. Both won NYS that year; Realbuto at 152 and Palacio at 160.

You may recognize some names from 2019 -- Eastern States is an under rated tournament.

2019 Eastern States Champions
99 Marc-Anthony McGowan Citrus Park, FL
106 Stevo Poulin Shenendehowa
113 Greg Diakomihalis Hilton
120 Sam Latona Thompson,AL
126 Ryan Jack Danbury
132 Justin McDougald Niagara Wheatfield
138 Adam Busiello Eastport-South Manor
145 Tyler Sung New Canaan
152 Zack Lawrence Duanesburg
160 Kyle Mosher South East Cyclones
170 Ross McFarland Phoenix
182 Jake Logan New Rochelle
195 Sammy Deprez Hilton
220 Will Leonard Cornwall
285 Joey Slackman Commack

It wasn't "quite handily" -- it was 8-5. Here's the 152 bracket where Realbuto was #1 seed and Palacio #2:

1230
REALBUTO
f 1:48 (semi result)
PALACIO
16-7 (semi result)

1322 PALACIO
8-5
LONG BEACH
Champion
