The bile in the gorge

Post by jdalu75 » Wed Jan 12, 2022 3:31 pm

So .... new Coaches' Poll released today by the NWCA. #17 Lehigh upset #8 Cornell, so Cornell drops five spots to #13, and Lehigh ... holds onto #17! Team did pick up 28 points, mostly at the expense of .... Princeton, which lost three spots after losing its dual to #5 NC State.

If ever you wondered whether the EIWA had any respect nationally, there's your answer. Vito and Yianni better not ever lose a bout, or else they'll drop .... kind of like Gabe Dean did a few years back, when he made the mistake of trying to wrestle while suffering from the flu.

While I don't disagree the EIWA is not always given the respect it deserves, I would also say the loss to Campbell IS on our record and probably not helpful to our ranking.....More surprised to not see McGonagle in the top 33 Intermat rankings at 141, he has only lost to 1,2,and 10......and one of his 3 wins he beat #13 (he is 3-3 on year).....but rankings tend to settle out as year goes on, I woulkd expect both Lehigh and McGonagle to rise if they continue to wrestle well.....

The loss to The Camels in the opener out in Oregon was figured in when LU was ranked 17th. You beat #8 you are supposed to move up not stay the same. Otherwise, the ranker will just keep using Campbell over and over again to penalize LU.

There is no logic to support this. Just laziness. And maybe politics.

Looking at intermat Rankings we are 18, who else do you put us ahead of? Cornell has beaten Virginia Tech who is 12……Missouri who we lost to 26-9 is only 5 spots ahead of us at 13…….. you obviously don’t drop Cornell behind us as they have better wins versus worse losses….our statement win other than Cornell is #23 Oregon State…..and Cornell’s worst loss is , well us…. Campbell not even top 33….

Only team i see us being ranked ahead of is Rutger’s who as always is overrated, their best win is against #22 NC….so maybe we should be #17? Rankings seem pretty accurate to me….

For what it's worth, Flo has moved LU from 22 to 14 and Cornell from 9 to 15 in its dual rankings.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…. flo’s rankings are click bait B.S….. Intermat rankings way more accurate, dropping Cornell like that below Lehigh makes zero sense and is just Flo being Flo…. Sure as Lehigh fans we say hell yes, we beat their asses!! But seriously, if rankings were always that reactionary they would be a joke, or in other words Flo’s rankings….

Look at Intermat’s rankings and tell me honestly, who do you think we should righteously be ahead of …..

The NWCA is voted on by coaches. The same guys who vote for the individual coaches' panel rankings that help determined qualification for NCAAs and seeding. Flo doesn't matter, in the end.

The NWCA moved Purdue from #15 to #12 because they squeaked by #9 Nebraska (now 15th). #17 Lehigh beats #8 Cornell and doesn't budge, but Cornell drops to 13th? Purdue has wrestled three ranked teams: W 18-15 over #9 Nebraska, L 23-13 #13 Iowa State, L 36-4 to #1 Iowa. None of their other opponents (all wins) scored a single point in the current rankings.

Lehigh lost to Campbell (by votes, #31; currently #25); beat Oregon State (by votes, #26); topped #15 Pitt; lost to #2 Penn State 23-16; beat #26 (by points) Central Michigan 25-6; lost to #1 Iowa 28-7; lost to #10 Missouri 26-9; and just topped #8 Cornell 18-15. But Purdue is spelled B-I-G-T-E-N. There's your reason why they moved up and Lehigh didn't.

Quick question:

Do all these polls ranks dual meet teams or do some rank based on anticipated tournament results?

I know that there were times when Lehigh fared much better in dual meets because we had better balance but lack of many stars.

And I still think that the Campbell result came because we collectively took them too lightly anticipating the match with Oregon St. the next day. :-)

They rank it both ways, we are 18th in dual team rankings and 24th in tournament team.

So your nose is out of joint because one, possibly 2 teams are ranked ahead of us you feel unjustly? (say Purdue and Rutgers)..... So if we were say 15 or 16 instead of 17 it would be fair? Also teams typically fall much faster than they rise especially when they lose to a team around 10 spots behind them.......Hey I'm a Lehigh fan obviously, I just don't see the big injustice..
