Navy
Re: Navy
I noticed a lot of funk by Navy. Wasn't sure who taught it. Kolat was crazy-legged but he came up just before funk. Letters was amongst the first.

Re: Navy
To add to drd comment on stalling. If the refs don’t want to pick one vs the other then there should be an automatic stall warning to both wrestlers for a 0-0 first period.
This would then become meaningful at the end of a close bout where the wrestler with the lead would be unable to do his normal last 30 second backup routine in the 3rd period & only risk a warning without points as occurs today. Seldom get 2 stalling calls within last 30 seconds so no chance for the losing wrestler to be able to take any legitimate shot or tie up.

I'm not sure how you describe funk but I always thought that if I looked it up there would be a picture of the Sloand brothers.
Re: Navy
Speaking of Darmstadt, what's his story? I'm a little out of the loop this season due to a couple of factors, but is he expected to wrestle this year? I was hoping to see someone give Ferrari a tough match. Was hoping he would be the guy to do it.
Re: Navy
The folks on the Cornell forum are puzzled. One time Coach Grey is quoted as saying that the "full team" will be available; a couple of weeks later he expresses doubt as to when Darmstadt will suit up. I know that Rob was concerned about him not graduating before his eligibility was used up, but that shouldn't be a factor this year. So the answer to your question is "Don't know".

Re: Navy
Just a thought but I recall that Darmstadt was a huge 197 #. Pile on a whole lot of inactivity and I would think it would be really difficult for him to make weight. Only idle speculation.
Re: Navy
As I recall, the scoreless first period stalling rule was 0-0, Automatic Double Stall.
But the rule was changed to: Ref make a choice. So a lot of refs would just stop the wrestling with 10 secs to go and call a double stall.
If you went back to stalling must be called in a 0-0 first period, what could be done is the ref and assistant each silently choose who is stalling. If they agree, that guy gets called. I f they disagree, both get called. But of course, sometimes, both guys are very aggressive, but both counter excellently. Think of the Hamlin-Bosak matches.

Re: Navy
He tried 184 (made it, but it killed him energy-wise), so he's not really a "heavy" 197. He sure is huge, lengthwise.
Darmstadt was injured without specifics, and Grey says it doesn't look like we'll be seeing him this year. He also is running out of Ivy eligibility: he hasn't taken much time off, so graduation looms. Koll had hoped that the Ivy League would amend their "no graduates" rule permanently, but I doubt that would happen.
Given that he possibly has NCAA eligibility left (medical waiver in there for one year), he would be an incredible grad transfer for someone.
Too bad. Even with only two seasons, he is way up there in a number of categories in the Cornell history book (pins, etc.)
