Trivia Question

Post by TMH » Tue Apr 26, 2022 3:21 pm

Just to fill in the gaps.

On another thread, I noted that there will be 4 PIAA 2X Champions and a 3X Champion in the room.

I suspect that this never happened before.

In the last 50 years (since I began following college wrestling), I could only come up with three PIAA 3X champs and 9 2X Champs at Lehigh, although 2 of those never really got to wrestle. That list obviously doesn't include next year's room

This was all done with a minimum of effort but can anyone name them and perhaps add to the list?

Yes, they hopefully will all be in the room next season.

The question though is how many 2 X and 3 X PIAA champs has Lehigh had in the last 50 years other than those 5.

I can only come up with 9 and 3 respectively. That was eye-opening to me. Can you name them or hopefully add more?

I'm not doing this from memory, but here's what I've got:

Bobby Weaver 2x
Rich Santoro 2x
Bernie Brown 2x
Jon Trenge 2x
Mike Pirozzola 2x
Troy Letters 2x
Matt Ciasulli 3x
Matt Fisk 2x
Mason Beckman 2x
Eric Hess 2x
Darian Cruz 2x
Luke Karam 3x

Two three-timers, 10 two-timers.

Marshall Peppelman, transfer, 3x, wrestled one year for us

Those are the ones I had except that Bobby Weaver was a 3X champion- 2 at 98 libs ('75 & '76) and 1 at 105# in '77.

That's 12 multi champs in 50 + years and we will have 5 in the room together next year.

The list is all time complete for 3 time PIAA champs. Prior to the fission in to two classifications for the 1973-74, there had been only five 3-time champs, and four three time champs

4 timers prior to split.
Jim Conklin
Jerry Maurey
Mike Johnson

3-timers
George Custer
George Lewis
Tony Gizoni
Don Maurey
Manuel Philakis

Bobby Weaver was the first 3 or 4 timer from east of Lock Haven.

Custer had some trouble out near Fargo as I recall.

Little Big Horn probably > 600 miles from Fargo. and about 600 people live in between. You enter Montana on I-94 and there is a sign that says the distance to cross the state is the same as New York city to Chicago. But one of the Reststops on 94 in ND may be the most spectacular on the highway system. Part of TeddyRNP.

After WW2 Conklin wrestled 2 years for U of Indiana. Then wrestled 2 years for Rex Peery at Pitt, while in Med School
