Blast From The Past

2002 semis vs. Jessman Smith. To me, this was more shocking than his finals win. He pulled his cement job from his back which requires incredible strength.

**** Thanks Mook: You could never count Rob Rohn out. The trick in beating him was never let him get ahold of your chin.

What I remember about that was that the largest cheering section in the arena -- Anybody But Iowa -- went wild with that pin.

I've thought at times that the 2002 NCAA tournament was a highwater mark in Lehigh's wrestling history. By the end of the tournament everyone was rooting for Rohn and Trenge -- seven falls between them -- and that was the year that the NCAA clamped down on all up-to-date reports from inside the arena. The only way word got out was Lehigh's radio feed, where KC Wennogle covered the tournament wire-to-wire, by himself.

o>>>What I remember about that was that the largest cheering section in the arena -- Anybody But Iowa -- went wild with that pin.

... But no one more annoying than my brother, Gary '67, who kept finding seats in the worst possible places at the worst possible times. He yelled 'yeah !!!" when Rohnnie pinned DeNisco from Wisc -- only to look over to hear: "it's not bad enough that you sneaked a seat in the Badger section ...but did you have to sit next to Ralph's mother?"
... Clearly a slow learner, when Gary leaped to celebrate Rohn's pin of Smith, he more quickly looked around to see nothing but bumble bee black & yellow shirts .... got the hell out of that far faster.

The flying cement job. It was awesome, and I can still see it happening in slow motion to this day.

I see the mats for the Semi's were still set up in the 6 as a rectangle pattern. I had thought that was the first year they wen to the current barbell 2-1-1-2 pattern.

Consolation semis at Albany began at like 8:00 MA Saturday did they not?

Denny, 1979 in Iowa, I will never forget it. Our highly distinguished boss, Jim Niemeyer, then Directory Lehigh Alumni Association, gave me the best job possible, organizing the alumni association trip to the 1979 NCAA tournament in Iowa. For my service, my expenses were paid. Jim Niemeyer ranks as one of the best. I think of him often to this day.

Yes, Jim was our boss and a friend for 3+ decades; also a subscriber to my Nat Mat News he knew exactly what I was doing coming in late on Tues mornings (putting the paper to bed last min so we could beat the pants off Amateur Wrestling News). When I worked my tail into hospitalization in '77, he cited wrestling as 1 of my problems. But I survived the 'cut' and 4 yrs later - still my boss and LWC Bd member he urged me to return to the Club board (which I had ducked to avoid recriminations). My reply: "Ok, boss, anything for LU Wrestling" 8-)
