2X Colorado state champ in high school.

With news of Caden Rogers pulling down, it begged the question of depth....serious depth from stem to stern.
So I agree with you mookie that a LU dual program from the '50s has zero relevance to this thread.

The woman who owned The Grotto was named Marie.
Samuelson has been a good wrestler for Wyoming. Qualifying for NCAAs four times is nothing to sneeze at, but he's gone 1-2 all three times the tournament has been wrestled; was seeded 10th in 2021. Definitely a quality starter, he'll need to step up his game to earn a medal.

I saw all the projections for weight cuts just like everyone else. I'll maintain a healthy skepticism until I see it happen.

While I was in grad school we had a weekly night at The Grotto, a short walk from Whitaker Lab. Before Christmas 1978 Marie brought everyone a free shot -- Bacardi 151 rum. You can smell that stuff as it's being poured and you can taste it when the glass is put down in front of you. I think it gets absorbed into the bloodstream before it hits the stomach.

Accidentally set someone on fire with Bacardi 151 Rum at a wedding in front of 250 people. Bottom line, he was OK, just singed his jacket - but boy - it was quite the sight.

…also off topic….Jad77…. Were you at your 45th reunion last weekend?

I was (35th)and hung out with Tom Toggas briefly at the Ho ( to somehow tie this back to wrestling)

Was a regular at Grotto ( and Ho and Ale house).

But then I became a property and liability insurance underwater. Realized with the kitchen between the dining room and outside.

So I stopped going there 25 years later

Most here ducked the oldest question in the book: yes, of course, there were fewer injuries before the '70's -- when the # duals began to soar after '73 from avg 11-12 toward 20+ .... PLUS the boom in open tourneys for all incl both back-ups and starters. PLUS an increase in off-season freestyle.

This was heavily due to the Gable impact, in which he bragged that he outworked everybody on the planet. Eventually ran his body into the ground but who's counting?
Just the subsequent boost in injury rate, I guess.

Can this theory be proven beyond a shadow of doubt? It can't be disproved.
Ask Oracle how many months/year most guys trained on the mats back then. It sure wasn't 10-12

In research for the LWC Fall Mat Wrap I found that in the 1930s we had plenty of injuries, frequently to our best wrestlers. Not to forget the quarantine one year due to a campus outbreak of German Measles (cleared up in time for us to compete at EIWAs). It's always been a rough sport.

>>>>> Practice started October 15 with zero organized pre-season conditioning. Some guys would run the hill but very, very few. After NCAAs, mid-March, there was no freestyle season. For all but a very select few, summertime consisted of full time work to help pay for school the next year. Some of us rolled around back home where ever we could find an open mat -- which was rare. On LI, we worked-out at the Rockville Center Rec -- an open mat run by Sam Boone, a Greco Olympian in 1964 who broke his wrist and did not compete. Ron Russo was de facto coach after Sam. Russo, from nearby Seaford, was 2X AA from Bloomsburg and future Columbia coach for 20 years, winning 3 straight Ivy titles -- not achieved by the Lions since he left. Those summer work outs lasted only July and August like 2-3 times per week. Hardly a strict, arduous schedule. No conditioning. Strictly working on set-ups and take downs and very little from top and bottom. Sam Boone was a judo black belt and taught a few nice leg sweep type throws.
