4.0s

Apparently 20 wrestlers got >=3.2 and 3 4.0s for the Spring Semester.

Great news.

But I'd be happy with a national champ with a 1.8

I believe we had an NCAA champ in the mid 70s with a "perfect" Cum. I can not remember which is type of perfect it was.

Kinda narrows it down --- it wasn't Sculley.

And it wasn’t Frick, as he was academically ineligible first semester senior year. Unless by “perfect” you mean imperfect.

Think Mark L. Was a pretty good student. I think he did that 5 year Engineering/MBA program (emphasis on “I think”).

He meant 0.0- which is why I brought up Staub.

I used to travel with the team in the '70's and was privy to the inside word of Frick receiving our 1st-ever 'cancellation loan' agreement after he lost 100% of his aid (the standard rule for back-to-back semesters on probation). Several key staffers met with him to offer the first: LU would loan the family 1 semester's aid; the univ would forgive the loan if, and only if, he got himself off pro. This mtg took place days after he returned from a little know story out of Slippery Rock - where he visited for 1 day planning to transfer. Phoned Thad the same day, totally lonely and out of place (unable to afford LU) and said: "I want to come home."

The human side of one of the nation's strongest wrestlers, who once hammered Michigan's Mark Churella, NCAA 3,1,1,1 at 150 -- a 2x 1st at 150; once WBF at 167 vs NCAA 3,6,2,2 Mike DeAnna, Iowa, whom Gable considers his best-ever not to win ncaas. Churella was the largest of 6 NCAA champs Frick beat a tot of 7x -- while competing in those bouts at 6 different wts, 118 to 158. At home meets, Frickie still often sits with Thad in Upper Grace.
