Before Mike Beard?

Who basically helped entice Garcia into likely becoming a 227 lb alternate hwt. That's what he weighed rolling around with Rey.

Most people would agree coming out of high school, Garcia was at or above Beard's level. Certainly had a higher over-all ranking....by far. What it says, more than anything, is Garcia is a football player. Period. The end.

No fault to be found with a guy preferring one sport over another. Hope he recovers and enjoys a nice FB career for LU.

Damn shame, really. Football at Lehigh is thankless. Lucky if they draw 5,000 fans and most are gone by halftime.

... I'm confoosed. Both were unbeaten their final two years, Gaige was 2x PA 1; Beard 3x Nat Prep - and was #10 sr vs Garcia, #20

... Ouch. Sheesh. Tell that to the 49er fullback who went from 1 yr at Drexel, to Fresno starter in both football & wrestling, All-American in wrestling (197) then 2020 #12 seed at hwt before Covid killed his shot at FSU's last 2x A/A. Gaige's future; not ours.

Ya' know, I think of Terry DeStito, former teammate of "O" and fr A/A 6th at 167 (was 174 so, 74/90 jr) who then waived his right as a senior 1 in '75 to w-off at 190 vs soph Don McCorkel. Say what, Terry? You're 5'9 1/2 and 215-225 even at your fattest & happiest? What were the odds at 'unlimited'? Done. Period.

So 4 bouts in, he beats (5-3 in Grace) Iowa's prototypical hwt, 6'4" 255 John Bowlsby, ncaa 5,5,3. Two bouts later, beats Robin Whisman, Iowa St, 6'6" 320. Then in Feb beat PSU's 6'4" 260 Brad Benson (started 123 gm w/Giants).

Fast forward to #3 seed, NCAAs, EIWA champ, 19-0-1 (tie w/Jeff Simon, who got killed by McCorkel, EIWA 190)
Retired with NCAA 5th, going 6-2.
Add it to the improbables. Never say never.

Wasn’t there someone else in the 70’s who had to wrestle up to make the lineup that A’A’d? Maybe thinking of DeStito but thought someone else

Tom Hutchinson in his junior year, wrestling up at 190 and getting 6th? ;)
(Went down to 177 in his senior yr.)

>>>>>>>> Ok, maybe I got their rankings mixed up but the rest of it is all accurate. Nothing there for you or anyone else to take exception to. "Gaige's future; not ours" is a little over the top. And what do you expect to be posted here? There has been zero info released on Garcia's wrestling future. Yeah, he rolled around with ZRey. So did Mike Sisselberger. This forum is for speculation....stop trying to control what people think. Nothing negative was posted.
End of rant.

Oh, what does Terry DeStito have to do with anything again?

Toth-Fejel? He wrestled 134 in 1975-76 until Frick made the cut; then they swapped weights.

This is the one I was thinking of but Hutch was a good call as well from D3. Shoulda had Hutch - wrestled against his Blair teams in hs and was dispassionately ripped to shreds each time. Guys like Chiapparelli all over the room.
