I have not seen any info that would lead me to believe Garcia will not be wrestling this year. I would think he will compete at 285. He will have a tough battle with Taylor. With Taylor being a former PA state champ, last years deferred wrestler of the year and a first semester jump on Gaige, Garcia’s work will be cut out for him. This and 165 might be weights not decided till February.

Everyone just assumes Taylor would be the guy, and maybe he will be. And maybe this is a case where he and Garcia will make one another better. They certainly pose body-type challenges for one another. Good to practice against your polar opposite. And Beard will benefit from Garcia as well -- big time.

Unless you're it's DeStito or Mike Newbern or Paul Weibel, you don't expect to go hwt 6'0" 215 or lighter.
But you do when you're forced up, or if hwt's a vacancy by roster or by injury.
I tried to explain why DeStito was relevant in this discussion but he wasn't buying the Kool-Aid
For his sr yr Terry jumped 2 wts to heavy - very fortuitous since our only option was good-sized Art Morin '77 who retired 0-2 at hwt.

Smallish heavyweights over the years have struggled against the big boys --- with the exception of quick and strong guys who aren't afraid to let it loose. Many times, big guys get caught under big guys when they shoot. I've also noticed big guys go down pretty easily if the attack is vicious enough and that's where speed/quickness comes in.
We could debate Jordan Wood all night long, but he was spectacular this past March due to his size and strength. He lost some quickness but it was off set by his horsepower.

DeStito was what, 235? He was quicker than most Hwts but wasn't as quick as Garcia might be. Terry placed 5th his only year as a Hwt.

It'll be interesting to watch this unfold.

5' 10" is not ideal for today's D1 athletes....however, he is built like a brick outhouse.

Several times, folks have posted here that he's been in the room working out and doing well. In fact, one poster said he was beating everyone (Beard wasn't there at the time) -- not sure what that means but it sounds encouraging.

Some fans here are seeing him as a heavyweight. 5' 10" may be ok for a 197 - but for a heavyweight?

As posted, not ideal, but Gaige Garcia is quite an athlete with a solid wrestling pedigree. Think positive.

In his senior year I ran a story in National Mat News on DeStito entitled: "LU Senior Wrestles Fat & Happy"
He was 5'9" 215, or 220 on his biggest days.

Beat Whisman, 2-1, Iowa St (approx 6'6" 310)
W 4-2 PSU's OL Brad Benson (6'3" 260), 10 yrs w/NY Giants
W 5-3 vs 3x A/A John Bowlsby (6'4" 250) in Iowa HOF.
Entered NCAAs 19-0-1 - only draw 1-1 vs 190 lb EIWA 1 (ncaa 5) Simon, Navy - whom McCorkel mauled in EIWA final

Like Top 4 seeds, Terry entered pigtails; lost in o.t. quarters to unseeded Avery, MichSt (no pigtail); memory sez this was the bout w/fisticuffs (pen. pts); no incidents in rematch for 5th (DeS won, 5-2); Bowlsby bumped down cons.

Terry was not that athletic but wrestled w/no mistakes - but stronger than I realized in school. At Midlands, I asked ISU great Carl Adams '72 (ncaa 5,1,1) how freshman DeStito tied him, 3-3. Answer from a Cyclone at the peak of ISU greatness: "he's 1 of the strongest guys I ever wrestled."

Most of us recall TD's most memorable moment: beating PSU's NCAA 3 at 174, Jerry White, 5-4, in Grace - as both lay flat on their backs for 30-40 sec in exhaustion. It was our only win vs White, who beat Mark Lieberman at 174 and McCorkel at 190 (not counting a WBDef vs White in EIWA final).

Seems McCorkel stole all of Terry's strength renown right out from under him. No one at Lehigh ever mentioned unusual strength. But I've definitely heard about Gaige's. Must depend on their 'press agents'

To the best of my memory, incl. Nat Mat News & LUWN story files, here's my best estimate of hwt A/As whom I recall wrestled somewhere between 215 and 230. When LVWC hired Dave Zabriskie for several yrs (yet another hwt ncaa finalist for us), he amazed me by saying he weighed in at 227 - w/shoes on. When I shared this scoop on an elevator at the Scufffle, a voice to my right asked: "What do you think I weighed?" I grinned, asking; "Who are you?" Grin back, shook my hand added: "Konrad Dudziak, Duke; 224 for the NCAA finals"

Is this on the decline? Of course. According to Russ Hellickson Wisc '70 (World 2,4,3 @198, 220), there is simply way more wt lifting done these days.
