>>>and before someone starts spitting out all kinds of statistics at me, was just a general statement and opinion.

.... Well, it was a spot-on addition meriting co-honors with Nathaniel - what are the odds that both Hatch and Nate shared identical best places of ncaa 2,7 and EIWA 1,2 ? (it's just a rhetorical question)

Splendid post by Oracle as he takes us down MEMORY-LANE!

However my preference is the 3X NCAA Champ, MIKE CARUSO, at the top of the leader-board.

My JERSEY bias shows: 1)Caruso 2)Burley 3)Frick

Pure speculation as to whether or not he may have won a fourth had he been allowed. but make up your own mind as you watch Fred Powell from Lock Haven(9:53M) at the 1964 tourney in Cornell,..my first NCAA love-fest.

Well, I'm new to the forum. So, I hope I can make a contribution now and again. I saw Darryl and Pete wrestle each other during summer Lehigh wrestling camps, and as I recall, Darryl had his number. Then again, I think Pete would have been the first to admit that he was not much of a practice wrestler and was much more competitive during live matches. In fact, I remember Rei Suzuki looked pretty competitive against Pete during practice, but then during early wrestle offs, Pete pounded him pretty good.

Oh, by the way, Matt Ruppel was also super good. I would probably list him in a top ten too.

Can anybody (esp. DRD) make a reasoned prediction as to how Caruso would have done had he been able to wrestle in the NCAA Tournament in his freshman year? Maybe do a wrestlestat type analysis (direct matchups and common opponents) of him v the top kids in his weight class.

Fred Powell (Slippery Rock Coach- wrestled at Lock Haven) would have been a formidable opponent at 123.
Would Mike have gone 115? Terry Finn SIU-Carbondale was a 2x small college champ and won NCAAs that year.

Even money at 115. 45% chance at 123. IMO

Wondering if Rich Warnke would have been top dog at 115 in Caruso's freshman year even if Caruso had been able to make the weight.

But I seem to remember Caruso wrestling at 123 or thereabouts in his senior year of high school.

Later: On second thought, I may have faux pased this whole thing. Were freshman allowed to compete in varsity dual meets in Caruso's day? And, if so, did Caruso wrestle dual meets for the varsity? If not, then he wouldn't have had any head to heads or common opponents with the top varsity kids who wrestled in the NCAA Tournament.
