The Spencer Lee Phenomenon

Post by Oracle » Sat Oct 01, 2022 10:48 am

You look at Spencer Lee, who at 5'3" tall with hardly any discernible muscular definition, and wonder how he is so dominating. At least I do. It's not like it's anything new -- he has always been dominating.

My conclusion is 2-fold: 1- Lee, like many other dominating types (Cael, Tayloy, Retherford. Nolf) attacks first and never allows the opponent to get their offense going. 2- He is obviously a heck of a lot stronger than he looks. In fact, he has dominating strength. It's the only thing that makes sense. Lee's technique is sound, but so are plenty of other wrestlers.

#2 Patrick Glory faced off against Lee very early as a true frosh and lost big, then again and the score narrowed somewhat. Interesting they are ranked 1 and 2 today. Can Glory do it with Lee coming off knee major surgery? If he takes out Lee it will be because he employs the Larry Owings strategy: attack first and reverse the paradigm.
Another example: Trenge was stronger than Cael but never had a chance because Cael was in on him within 2-3 seconds. That's what Glory will have to do...and do.....and do.

Have a great weekend and pray for those folks in Florida who are under water. Can't imagine what that's like.

If Lee stays unbeaten (? After 2-3 major inj) Araju still huge factor in semis

SL could win on the mat but lose on his feet; modern medicine can only do so much

>>>>>>> Early reports show Vito going 133. Do you believe he will drop down later in season? Ranked 3rd either way so wouldn't see Lee until the finals.

Yianni very similiar in some ways, doesn’t look all that strong, but obviously is…. Just very good positional wrestlers, usually thinking one move ahead of the guy across from them…and have deeper repertoires then pretty much everyone that gets put in front of them….

From what i’ve read and heard Vito is at 133 to stay this year, but ya never know…

Not at 125 this year, according to Mike Grey (told to me in person this summer).

Folks,

Spencer Lee is monster strong. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dc06aN-qIjs. Honestly, even without this video he looks pretty f-in buff. I wrestled around his weight (I was pretty strong) and I could never have done half the shit he does. He has freakishly strong arms.

I wonder if Spencer Lee will leave his shoes on the mat next March?

I guess I need to be more specific for a couple of folks. Will he retire from Competition at the NCAA tournament? If he wins, he will go out as Iowa's first 4 time champ. Obviously he is a far more successful 125 NCAA wrestler than Gilman, but with freestyle rules is he just to small, like Darian, just too small. And if he could put on weight and muscle is he just too injured?

And if he fails to win?

Not gonna do more than skim a half hr video which includes no wrestling action, nor proof that his knees can handle seven minutes. I'm rooting for Lee because he deserves it and hope his knees survive
