Banner Year for the East

Post by Oracle » Tue Mar 21, 2023 4:19 pm

Out of the 10 weights, 6 were from traditional Eastern schools: Cornell (2), PSU (2), Princeton, Pitt.
4 finalists from PA
2 champions from New York

Did you know?
Vito and Yianni wrestled for the NY state title as 8th graders in 2013? Yianni prevailed in OT UTB 3-2. Could be wrong but I think that was Vito's last high school loss. They both won titles as freshmen in 2014, as sophomores in 2015, as juniors in 2016, Vito won again as a senior becoming a 4X champ, while Yianni missed his senior year.

99 lb NYS Div 1 state finals in February 2013.....Yianni won 3-2 in 3OT (TB)........both 8th graders.........after that they avoided being at the same weight the following years by mutual agreement, or so the legend goes.....Vito won at higher weight than Yianni the next two years, then Yianni won a weight higher than Vito the next year.....then Yianni didn't wrestle senior year states due to injury

Nick Piccininni who ended up at OK State won OW at 113 lbs as a sophomore in 2013,

In 2014 Yianni, Vito, Piccininni won 106,113,120

In 2015 Yianni, Piccininni, Vito won 120,126,132

In 2016 it went Jacori Teemer 126, Vito 132, Yianni 138 (Piccininni had graduated)

Imagine being a "good" high school wrestler trying to wrestle in those weight ranges those years

Posted this on Cornell forum, some of it overlaps what you said but figured I'd throw it on here.....crazy stuff

Penn State has two national champs, and their fans are wildly disappointed. Dake & Yianni win 4 each and Cornell seemingly has at least one champ every year.

Lehigh fans get a chubby if they get a Saturday wrestler.

You're not wrong... it was his first, last, and only high school loss. Career record 216-1, closing with a 173-match win streak.

125 NJ
133 NY
149 NY
157 IL Lockport, IL East of Mississippi :D
165 WI Hartland, WI East of Mississippi
174 PA
184 MD
197 PA
285 IN East of Mississippi

No Ohio? What's going on. Pretty much all East, sans the 2 Midwesterners and 141 Colorado.
Any correlation of recruiting by geography? Seems like you could do really well recruiting PA/NY/NJ State Champs. God I would love see PA, OH, NY all go to a single division for Individual State Championships. Keep multiple divisions for Team State, but for an individual sport, it sure would be nice to see the fastest track athletes all together and the best wrestlers all in the same tournament.
