Speaking of NIL Collectives

Post by JAD77 » Thu Apr 04, 2024 1:22 pm

From the Iowa State wrestling forum:

After Iowa State won the Big 12, a Cyclone made a wonderful offer to We Will that now increases our match. Now all gifts up to $400,000 between now and the Final 4 will be matched. Please consider giving at We Will Collective.

It appears as if this collective is for all sports, but there are some big $$ being thrown around out there. Just sayin' - competing on the portal can take some serious cash.

Absolutely correct. Plenty of money for wrestling. Lehigh fans focus on Lehigh, of course, but do we actually think we can compete with Michigan, VA Tech, Okla St, Iowa? When any of these power programs decide they want to go after something, they will swamp our boat every time. The money is significant -- more than you might imagine.

What's been tough to grasp, for some, is the University doesn't control the contributions, but coaches get to dole them out -- which is odd -- but it's a system that's out of whack at the moment as most observers know.

Could you imagine if Pat could pay a guy $200,000 in NIL money for 1-year? Get's ya thinkin, eh?

Up to $400k...is $800k. Run like an endowment at 5% payout each year, that is all of $40k per year across at least 400 plus athletes at Iowa State if evenly distributed or about $100 per athlete.

Except for a few select universities and a few elite athletes, I just still do not see the economics that it is a game changer for many programs.

No, because any alumni who gave $200k would want it to be structured like an endowment, not a one time payment. So $200k gets you $10k per year for a single athlete. If distributed across the 10 starters, $1000 per athlete. Not a game changer. Give the dearth of $100k donors each year to Lehigh and current alumni sentiment of the university and current President and past President, I do not see a multimillion dollar raise for NIL.

So no, I cannot imagine Pat ever paying $200k to land an elite wrestler.

>>>>>>>> Time to embrace the new NIL era.

A business can pay an athlete sizable amounts to help promote their business and it’s a legitimate business advertising expense. Or ‘overpay’ an athlete for an internship.

We’re raising millions for an LVWC endowment, but posters cry ‘poor Lehigh’ when it comes to attracting Lehigh wrestlers.

NIL funding will, and should, correspond with performance. Similar to wrestlers that win Olympic medal receive payments.

Coaches handing out $200k may happen but that exceeds most salaries of head coaches. Something is amiss!!l

Yes, something is amiss.......$200K doesn't exceed the salaries of the coaches that are giving that kind of money out. You don't notice App State, but you do notice Michigan. Listen, we can debate this all day long and twice on Sunday, but it's happening. To sign an elite grad transfer, this is what it's going to take. You don't have to like it, you don't have to believe it, you don't have to agree with it, but it's a reality.

And the schools really don't care, because it's not their money.

BTW, talk about a cone of silence -- have we ever heard a peep out of what PSU did to sign those guys last year?
