JOHN SMITH retires

Post by 1/2NELSON » Fri Apr 12, 2024 10:41 am

Speculated for some time now comes to fruition!

With advancing age he had become somewhat cantankerous, and a whinner, but amicable in my conversation with him a year ago at our place. I referred to him as a LEGEND as I shook his hand in Grace Hall a year ago, and asked him if had been up in the attic to the Caruso Wrestling Complex? He said it was absolutely beautiful, and they needed something like that back in Stillwater. 8-)

Highly decorated as WRESTLER/COACH is an understatement

Same age as Pat Santoro 58. Smith 100–5 at Sr. Level. Amazing!
He most definitely is a legend and still quite young. Wonder if Okie State will have him doing something within Athletics Department. If not, he will get plenty of appearance fees for media and coaching clinics.

33 years. Acknowledged he was ready to retire 2-3 years ago, but stuck around to leave the program in a better place.

The COWBOYS just going thru the mandatory formality of a hiring process/protocol for COACH, when the choice was made a year ago when the GOAT reached out to Coleman Scott at North Carolina.

102 of 108 years have been coached by an Oklahoma State alumni. Only Joe Seay and now David Taylor.
A huge gamble of PA's Coleman Scott to leave as Head Coach at North Carolina as heir apparent of John Smith that now has not paid off. A huge move by AD to go after David Taylor which I guess means he is done with wrestling and will not stick around for another cycle for 2028. It is a massive hire because Taylor will attract talent. Then you have Penn State and Oklahoma State as the ones to try to stay up with. It is going to be tough. I think Brands value at Iowa is starting to wane. They are not getting the PA wrestlers anymore. Michigan may be able to stay in the mix. Cornell can stay in the mix. Will be interesting times ahead for Teams at NCAA.
